Trombonist of the Vienna Philharmonic
Wolfgang Strasser, born in 1968 in Mistelbach, began playing the tenor horn at the age of ten and switched to the trombone at fourteen. In 1984, he began studying at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna with Helmut Ascherl and Herbert Mosheimer, graduating with distinction in 1991. He furthered his education through masterclasses with Branimir Slokar and additional studies with Dietmar Küblböck at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. During his studies, he gained orchestral experience with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the RSO Vienna, and the Volksoper. From 1991 to 2013, he served as principal trombonist of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2013, he joined the Vienna State Opera, and in 2016 became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition to his orchestral work, Wolfgang Strasser regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician with ensembles such as "die reihe", "Kontrapunkte", the Vienna Trombone Ensemble, and phil Blech Wien. Since 2011, he has been Professor of Trombone at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
